Music publisher Warner/Chappell Music announced several hires to its U.S. A&R team including the appointments of both Lee Dannay and Brad Aarons to Vice President of A&R and Peter Visvardis to Senior Director of A&R.
The trio will be responsible for working with the company’s existing roster of songwriters as well as identifying and signing emerging songwriters. All three executives will report to Greg Sowders, Senior Vice President and Head of A&R for Warner/Chappell Music.

There was no real game changer on Thursday as the US Copyright Royalty Board ruled that for the next five years:
- Mechanical download rates would remain at 9.1 cents per track
- Ringtone rates were set at 24 cents. This mirrors the industry practice 10% of revenue on a $2.50 ringtone and was actually higher than the 15
cents per song requested by publishers
- Following a joint industry agreement, services that stream music on
the net will pay 10.5% of revenue minus the 5% paid in performance
royalties retroactive to 2001.

EMI Music Publishing UK, has appointed Kenny McGoff to head function as SVP, Head of A&R. He will report to EMI Publishing UK President Guy Moot and to be based in London. McGoff originally joined the company as A&R Manager in 2000, and has since signed UK songwriters including Arctic Monkeys, The Enemy, The Feeling, the Fratellis, Kasabian, Paul Epworth, Reverend & The Makers, Scouting For Girls and The Zutons. - MORE AFTER THE JUMP.

Cynthia Sexton has been promoted to EVP, Global Brand Partnership, Licensing and Synchronization for EMI Music. In this expanded role, Sexton’s is responsible for worldwide licensing of all EMI assets for film, television and branded products and services. She will also oversee new initiatives to develop relationships between EMI’s labels, artists and consumer brands.

Songwriter/producer Nate “Danja” Hills took home top honors as Songwriter of the Year at SESAC’s 12th annual New York Music Awards last week in NYC. Hill had an impressive array of hits in the last year by Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and 50 Cent. Hills also won Song of the Year award for his smash hit, “Say It Right,” as recorded by Nelly Furtado.

Last night, EMI Music Publishing was named publisher of the year for a record 14th time by ASCAP at their annual Pop Music Awards. EMI songwriters including Fergie, Beyonce, Nelly Furtado and Stargate’s Tor Eric Hermansen also won ASCAP awards.

Signing rights from music publishers is a critical element in SpiralFrog’s push to make ad-supported music downloading available. Licensing sound recordings and music videos requires more than just obtaining rights from the recording artists and record labels. The writers and composers of the songs themselves must also be compensated and music publishers license these underlying compositions.
