How Rhapsody Will Handle DRM-Free

As announced last week, starting on 8/21 Rhapsody will sell select 256kps tracks from Universal at the same price as protected files—89 cents per song for Rhapsody subscribers and 99 cents for non-subscribers. Ronda Scott PR Manager, Music at Rhapsody's parent Real provided us with some additional insights.

Hypebot: If a track is offered DRM free will it only be offered in that format?

Rhapsody: Yes.  If the track is being offered as a part of the UMG test, it will only be offered in the DRM-free MP3 format.Tracks the same price as protected files — 89 cents per song for Rhapsody subscribers and 99 cents for non-subscribers.

Hypebot: Will these tracks be mixed into the regular Rhapsody system and tagged or somehow segregated?

Rhapsody: The test tracks will be integrated just like DRM'ed tracks into the individual artist pages. The "BUY" buttons on those pages will indicate to the consumer that they are buying an MP3. We will also have a navigation link to an "Artists available in MP3" for consumers who are interested in seeing the full DRM-free offering.

Hypebot: Any plans to add EMI or other DRM free tracks?

Rhapsody: We have been working with the labels for some time now to move in the direction of selling  DRM-free downloads across the board.  No dates or specific plans to announce right now, though.
